Our History: A Tradition of Excellence

In 1986, a small, home-based business opened its doors in West Marin. Michael and Bonnie Fontana had a clear vision for their new construction company – to provide an exceptional customer-focused team committed to professionalism, integrity, and a superior product.

30 years later, Fontana Construction has grown into one of the most respected construction companies in Marin County.


Mike Fontana - Founder

Mike graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology after obtaining Associate Degrees in science and mathematics. Although he chose to pursue a career in his true passion - building - his aptitude for math and detail-oriented thinking served him well.

Prior to founding Fontana Construction, he worked as a carpenter, field foreman and estimator for a local construction company. Through his many roles, he gained hands-on skills and a broad understanding of project management on a strategic level.

His respect and care for the client continue to create an environment that delivers great work on time. That's what sets Fontana Construction apart.

Bonnie Fontana - Founder

Bonnie, a West Marin native, has been central to Fontana's growth and development. Her values-based leadership, attention to detail, and organizational management skills created the conditions for the exceptional customer service and professionalism that Fontana has become known for.

Prior to opening Fontana Construction, she was a senior partner in Just Business, a Business Service Company in Marin.

Our team

Stevan Fontana - President / Estimator

Stevan graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management and Technology from Northern Arizona University. Grounded in construction-based engineering and business management, Stevan has worked in senior level positions at Fontana since 2003.

During that time, he managed large-scale custom remodels and additions including a complex apartment renovation. He is known for his exceptional work ethic and drive for excellence that he developed as an athlete and player in the NFL.

Stevan lives in Petaluma with his wife, son and daughter.

Lee Bonilla - Office Manager

Lee grew up in Texas and has lived in California since age 12. He manages bookkeeping, IT, and procurement, and is known for tracking down the highest quality and cost effective products adding even more value for our clients.

His skills in office management and knowledge of construction products through his work in the hardware industry support the team in keeping their projects running smoothly and on time. Working smart behind the scenes, Lee makes a difference throughout the company and for our clients.

Jon Tompioner - Senior Project Manager / Company Superintendent

The Tompioner family dates back to the 1800's in Marin. Jon was hired as a Project Foreman in 1986, and now plays a crucial role on the management team supervising and training our project managers and staff.

His knowledge and experience are unmatched in the industry and he is relied on for many of the company's most challenging projects. He shows the utmost dedication to each project and puts quality and integrity first with clients and his team.

Jon lives in Santa Rosa with his wife and has 5 grown children.

Jon Ward - Project Manager

Jon graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Arts degree in design before launching a career that spans decades in the industry.

After earning a second degree in architecture he practiced in California and Hawaii before moving into corporate roles building and remodeling stores at Gap, Williams-Sonoma, and Pottery Barn. Over the last decade, Jon has developed a detailed approach to construction management focusing on high-end residential and commercial projects.

Nathan Serratore - Head Estimator / Project Manager

With over 15 years of experience in the field, Nathan quickly became one of our lead project managers.

Nathan is known and admired for his focus and calming presence keeping his team operating at their best. He brings energy, commitment, and enthusiasm to his work and his team.

Mark Sowers - Project Manager

A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Mark has extensive financial analysis experience in construction bringing a wide range of expertise to our team.

His experience in home construction include building tiny homes up to 300 square feet and timber frame home design. Mark also worked as a chain-of-custody auditor for the Forest Stewardship Council, a program that ensures products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.

Jason Fowler - Project Manager

Jason was raised in a family of general contractors and family-run businesses in landscaping and plumbing. After graduating with a BA in Management from California State University Chico, he worked for 10 years in management positions at Hyatt Hotels and REI; and 10 years gaining field and estimating experience in a local construction firm.

To round out his career, Jason served as a Critical Care EMT. He is passionate about his family, career, and community. He lives in Petaluma with his wife and 2 children.
